In a recent article for Sarnia This Week, Bob Bailey, MPP of Sarnia-Lambton, wrote about the commitments to the people the Ontario legislature has delivered on in just twelve months. With a focus on accountability, transparency, and putting the people first, the government had approached their task by always asking the question: is this good for the people?
In his opinion piece, Bailey listed several changes the legislature made. From boosting the economy to welcoming new jobs to investing in infrastructure, the government implemented over 250 accomplishments. Regarding his outlook for the future of Ontario, Bailey wrote, “Our vision is clear. We see a future where Ontario is the economic engine of Confederation once more. We see a legacy of world-class healthcare where no patient is left waiting for hours in a hospital hallway. We see an opportunity to set our students up for success in the modern workforce. This is a future well within our reach if we come together and overcome our inherited challenges.”
One of the challenges the Ontario legislature addressed was dental care. The government included in its budget a $90 million provision for free dental care for low-income seniors. Any Ontario resident who is sixty-five years or over and makes under $19,300 without dental benefits qualifies for the Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program. Couples earning a combined income of $32,300 or less without dental benefits also qualify. These free dental services will be offered across Ontario through community health centres, public health units, and aboriginal health access centres.
